WHAT I DO -
As a Community Support Worker (CSW) I provide support services to your family during the Intake, Assessment and Intervention process of the EIIS service delivery system. I will help you to understand how the system works and what is expected of you.As the Community Support Worker, I may gather information about your child's development that will help the psychologists decide if an assessment for autism is appropriate. If necessary, I may be able to help arrange transportation for you and your child to attend assessment and intervention appointments.
After your child has received a diagnosis, I may work with your child and family on specific recommendations made by the EIIS Autism Team. When appropriate, I will provide support and suggestions to help you accomplish the goals set out in your Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP). I can also help you to get connected to other community resources and services in your area.
WHAT I DON'T DO -
As a Community Support Worker I am unable to provide childcare for your children.SOME TERMS I USE -
Although I use many terms these are some that you will hear often:Intake: Intake is the first step towards getting your child seen by the EIIS Autism Team. It is a process of gathering information that lets the team know that you have a concern about your child's development.
Assessment: If the team suspects that your child might have an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) then they will want to do an assessment. The assessment is called the ADOS and involves a series of activities that help to determine if your child meets the criteria for an ASD.
Development: This is the lifelong process of learning and applying new skills.
Family Centered: This means that your child's services and supports are based on the strengths and needs, concerns, priorities and resources that you have identified. Services and support are designed to respect your family's concerns, interests, values and priorities.
Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP): The IFSP is an action plan that identifies your family's priorities and what services will be provided to meet the needs of your child and family. The IFSP process is flexible, continuous and individualized to reflect your family's unique interests, expectations and circumstance. WHAT I NEED FROM YOU -
- As a parent you know your child best and I will ask you to provide me with information about your child's development over the last several months. This information will help the team decide whether an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a possible reason for your concerns.
- I also rely on you to tell me when it would be best to visit and to call me to cancel when you are not available.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM ME -
I will help you to access services from the EIIS Autism Team. To do this I will meet with you and your family at home, in the clinic, at daycare or somewhere else in your community. I will ask you questions about your child's habits and may ask to video tape him/her while he/she plays. I will do my best to answer your questions about how the system works and what you can expect.I will confirm with you the time, date and place of appointments and ask you for your input about how things are going.
If the diagnosis is positive, I will be part of the team that will work with your family to develop an Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) specific to your needs. As part of the IFSP, I may be available to help you in specific areas like behaviour, socializing, toileting, or entering the community. If your child does not meet the criteria for an ASD, referrals will be made to appropriate services that may help your child and family.
I will support your family through service delivery. I will also encourage you to make decisions about your child's development and help you to advocate for his/her needs.
